Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) welcomes the opportunity to provide this submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression for her thematic report on freedom of expression and elections in the digital age.

The submission draws on MMA's experience with Real411, the platform for public reporting of mis- and disinformation, which during South African elections operates under a framework between MMA, the Independent Electoral Commission and the social media platforms. It sets out the mis- and disinformation trends seen during the 2024 national and provincial elections, including false information about electoral processes and attempts to undermine the credibility of the IEC, together with responses and good practices from a South African perspective.
